Visiting Monet’s gardens at Giverny, France, inspired this series. His renowned flower gardens and water lily pond were unspeakably beautiful. My day at Giverny and another day seeing his paintings of water lilies at the Musee de L’orangerie in Paris — the famed Les Nymphéas — made me want to express my appreciation on canvas. Just a few months later, I spent the summer in Coronado, California, and while visiting Balboa Park in San Diego, I encountered more water lilies near the park’s botanic gardens. The Water Lilies that you see in this series are my composites of scenes from the peaceful, calming grace of the water lilies in Giverny and San Diego.
